Hebden Bridge – Inkfolk – ROUGH FIELDS + THE SLY AND UNSEEN – Sunday 15th March 2015

rough fields webFor our 2015 return to Inkfolk, we are doing something very mellow a night of chilled drones and ambient sounds on the cutting edge of experimental. A sort of tribute to the classic Hibernate Records shows that used to happen at the Hole In T’ Wall and the Birchcliffe Centre in 2010. Headlining we have the acclaimed Rough Fields. Described as “Astonishing music” by Gilles Peterson, “Tremendous” by Lauren Laverne, “Really rather good” by Gideon Coe, “Outstanding experimental music” by www.blindfun.com and “…the new Robert Wyatt!” Nick Luscombe (BBC Radio 3).

Speaking of Hibernate Records, our second act The Sly And Unseen is a duo featuring Mr.Hibernate himself, Jonathan Lees and Katie English who records as Isnaj Dui and is a member of The Owl Service and Littlebow among many others. They have released one EP on Rural Colours of beguiling, tactile instrumentals as well as a split vinyl EP with Caught In The Wake Forever.

Todmorden – Unitarian Church – NICK HENNIES + MATT WAND – Friday 13th February 2015

henniesA great double-bill featuring compelling and immersive approaches to spatial music featuring solo percussion from American composer Nick Hennies, who’ll be performing pieces by Peter Ablinger, John Cage and premiering his own work for the first time on English shores, and a solo electronic performance by British Musician Matt Wand who will be delighting with his multi miniature speaker 8-bit-ness. Expect a maximalist/minimalist nibbling at the ears.

Additional musics finely spun by one of the valleys’ finest purveyors of all things amplified‘was ist das’ sound system.
One of the few ways that a bit of Terry Riley might meet Whitehouse!

All lovingly put together under one roof at the stunning Unitarian Church.

For those coming from Manchester or Leeds who will be trainin’ it, the concert will finish in good time to get a further pint or two with us or out int’ town before last train home.

Hebden Bridge – Inkfolk – DEAN McPHEE + LOCAL IMPROVISERS + THE ALTERED HOURS – Sunday 7th December 2014

local improvisers webWas Ist Das? is promoting again after an Autumn sabatical.

Girl Sweat have been thwarted in their attempts to play so stepping into the breech is acclaimed solo guitarist Dean McPhee. His album “Son Of Black Peace” on Blast First Petite won him rave reviews from such disparate sources as The Wire, Record Collector, Drowned In Sound, Mojo and even Pop Matters who said it was “as devastatingly beautiful as Michael Chapman’s Fully Qualified Survivor, the best of John Fahey, John Martyn, and the most meditative lines Richard Thompson has ever played”.

Local Improvisers is a new Todmorden trio consisting of Sam McLoughlin (Samandtheplants/N.Racker), Bridget Hayden (Vibracathedral Orchestra) and Jake Blanchard. Formed initially to do a live soundtrack to a screening of Nosferatu last Halloween, they’ve decided to carry on the good work and play music with the constraints of a film dictating what they do.

Last minute welcome additions to the bill are Irish shoegazer noisepop band The Altered Hours. They’ve just done a couple of EPs but have already attracted great reviews and were taken to Berlin to record for A Recordings, home of psychedelic pioneers The Brian Jonestown Massacre, Dirty Beaches and Magic Castles.

Admission is just £3 and hopefully the new festive Was Ist Das? compilation tape will be ready and on sale.

Hebden Bridge – Masonic Hall – WOODEN WAND – Saturday 27th September 2014

WANDWASISTDAS webWas Ist Das? is slowly winding down in the gigs in advance of moving to America in 2015. This will most likely be the last touring gig we will do in Hebden Bridge so it has to be something special…..something like Wooden Wand!

Simply our favourite singer-songwriter of modern times. He’s been praised by everyone from Uncut to Pitchfork via the national newspapers and the likes of us. Like Neil Young, he reinvents his sound every album taking in folk, alt-country, rock n roll and so many moods but never lets up with the great lyrics and music.

Earlier this year he released the amazing “Farmers Corner” on Fire Records, from which this song is taken:

It’s going to be a special night, there’ll be a very limited live cassette on Was Ist Das? released for this tour but thats not all….

Was Ist Das? is collaborating with Hand-Drawn Monkey Brewery for a beer to commemorate Wooden Wand’s 2014 UK tour so we will be serving Bobby Extra Stout. Its a hoppy stout and 6.5% so enjoy responsibly and if you can’t then take advantage of the fact this is a last train friendly gig! If you’re wondering why it’s called “Bobby” then click play:

Oh, and did I mention the support? No, I didn’t…..perhaps I am not going to…..but don’t arrive late or you WILL regret it!
