This month’s show is another mix with just me yapping at the start and end. The playlist was chosen by shuffling my music library and I then mixed it all together in an order that made sense. We lost a vital member of the Was Ist Dad? family yesterday, our dog Yeti. His main contribution was wandering into the frame during my video reviews with an almost knowing approach to mise-en-scene, bringing a little life and humility to counteract my music rambles. He also sat next to me while I DJ’d a couple of times. You can also see him on the poster for the Tor Ist Das! Festival. A celebrity on the Hebden Bridge pub scene, he will be sorely missed.
Latest releases on the Was Ist Das? label are both by David Colohan and why not?
Available on CDR and download.
New reviews up on the Features page, including a video review for High Rise and scrawlings for Bong and Al Doum & The Faryds
Delighted to say that Was Ist Das? is putting on its very first USA concert. Its not been two years since we relocated to Phoenix, Arizona and apart from DJing a couple of times at other people’s shows, things have been quiet. All that changes Friday 14th September.
Well, been desperate to see Father Murphy live and they’ve announced they are calling it a day so I just had to. The enigmatic Italian psychedelic occult duo have released their final album, the acclaimed “Rising. A Requiem For Father Murph”, and are going out on one last tour of the world. That tour includes Phoenix, Arizona. What does Father Murphy sound like? Every album seems different. Psychedelic? Classical? Soundtracks? Laments? Yes to all the above and more. They’ve played with Swans, Xiu Xiu and gone everywhere. They will be missed. Make sure you don’t miss them tonight.
Sunn Trio are one of the hottest acts in Phoenix. Tight, pulsing explorations in sound that bring to mind everything from surf to Sun Ra, Arabian to garage rock. They have just announced their second album will be coming out around the same time on European label Unrock who have released countless Sun City Girls-affiliated releases so the Phoenix connection is staying strong.
Lana Del Rabies is a one-woman powerhouse of intense vocals and crushing noise. The only sane response to insane times. Praise has been coming in fast including from The Wire who said “…a sensorial passion for modern horror soundtracks, to construct a terrifying collection of sonic hauntings.”Really delighted to have my first choice for line-up all say yes. It’s all happening at The Lunchbox a fantastic intimate venue but with a proper stage, bar and P.A. I love it when a plan comes together. http://wasistdas.co.uk/eventblog/?p=1638
I’ve written a piece on the use of Radiophonic and electronic music generally in horror for the anthology “Harvest Hymns” put together by the Folk Horror Revival team. The anthology is so big its been split across two volumes, I’m in Volume one alongside Maddy Prior, Jonny Trunk, Sharron Kraus, John Cameron and Candia McKormack and many more. It’s in aid of The Wildlife Trust and you can get it here

Very excited to announce I am an Associate Producer on the forthcoming documentary about Damo Suzuki’s battle with cancer and his return to the stage. Made by Michelle Heighway, who made the excellent “Mr Somebody” about Huddersfield eccentric Jake Manglewurzel.
I was present for the first couple of batches of filming so I might even appear in front of the camera. I certainly saw my arm in the trailer:
So, while it’s all been filmed, post-production and marketing ain’t cheap so there’s a crowdfunding campaign set up to try and raise some funds for that. Lots of great rewards involved including mugs, t-shirts, artwork and, of course, the film itself. Get involved here
UPDATE: signed vinyl & digital downloads added to rewards!
UPDATE#2: crowd-funding now over. £13,566 GBP raised by 178 backers. Thanks to everyone who got involved, this is going to be a great film. I’ll make sure to buy a big bunch of copies of the finished project for the Was Ist Das? shop so watch this space.
