There’s just something special about the pop-up Inkfolk venue in the basement of Machpelah Works mill in Hebden Bridge and it’s great to keep on being invited back to put on these Sunday shows there. We’ve got another great double bill to end your weekend in Hebden with.
Making her Was Ist Das? debut is Sophie Cooper with her band. Sophie has previously played with Cooper-Jones, Leopard Leg, Wing Horses, Tom Cool, Remedial Queen of England, The A Band and others. Her new project sees her blending noise with pop and drone music and she will be backed by Pascal from Part Wild Horses Mane On Both Sides on drums and the one and only Joincey.

http://sofiecooper.wordpress.com/

Bridget Hayden made her name with underground heroes Vibracathedral Orchestra. Since then she has played in The Telescopes as they went further out there with their sound and has put out some truelly blinding solo releases such as 2011′s “A Siren Blares In An Indifferent Ocean” and recent compilation “Shipwrecked”.

After last year’s jaw-dropping solo set, we just had to get Wooden Wand back on in Hebden and this time he’s kindly bringing along his whole band with him and leaving behind a trail of rave reviews for this years album “Blood Oaths Of The New Blues”. If you’ve not had the pleasure yet, here’s a couple of choice cuts:

Praise for Blood Oaths of the New Blues

“this is the sound of one musician’s prolific and mercurial path, reaching delightful new highs.” Pitchfork 7.9

“James Jackson Toth deploys steel guitar, drones and languid acoustic folk with a connoisseur’s touch.” The Financial Times 4/5

“Strangely hypnotic” The Sunday Times

“It’s folk, yes, but with wickedness instead of a waistcoat.” Q

“James Jackson Toth’s ruminations on morality and life in general are as thought-provoking as ever and his music as gorgeous.” Soundblab – Album of the Week

A darkly beautiful songwriter at the height of his powers, often drawing comparisons to Bob Dylan and Nick Cave, Wooden Wand has been an underground secret the last few years but this year his star is on the rise as the press has finally taken notice. This could be the last chance to see in a venue this size and is also the first time he has toured the UK with a full band.

Support comes from Darkher, the new project from Jayn Hanna, formerly of The Steals

Tickets £8 non members £6 members, available from the venue, Jumbo Records and online at We Got Tickets

We’re delighted to be in a new Hebden venue, the intimate studio of the former Nutclough Tavern. Joining us for this special shindig, all the way from Vienna is Bird People. Bird People first caught our ears with the excellent “A Pulse In The Void/Sky Huntress” album that mixed banjos, sitars, drones and ballads to blissfully lovely effect.

Opening the night, we have local boy Johnny Powell playing his third show for us. He recently released his debut album, “The Difficulties of..” and very good it is too:

The difficulties of… by Johnny Powell and the Big Sad Face of Infinity

Attendees are asked to make a donation towards Bird People’s travel expenses and are also advised this is an unlicensed venue so bring your own booze.

Topping the bill we are very excited to have a live set from ICR Records don Colin Potter. Colin’s early work managed to draw lines from the electronic side of krautrock, Throbbing Gristle and Brian Eno and marched forward into the future. After racking up an impressive solo discography and many production credits throughout the 80s, Colin joined Nurse With Wound in 1992.

However, despite recording and gigging all over the world with Nurse With Wound, Colin still finds time to not only maintain a high quality solo output, he also collaborates with the likes of Fovea Hex, Human Greed, The Hafler Trio, Bass Communion and many more. He’s a busy man who rarely plays solo but he’s kindly made some time for you because you’re going to be in Hebden Bridge that day.

Who else could support Colin but semi-local drone monsters Slomo? They previously played on the same bill together in London last year at the behest of Mr.Sunn O))) himself Stephen O’Malley. Slomo are a duo consisting of local lad Howard Marsden and, from Julian Cope’s band, Holy McGrail. They’ve done two albums for prestigious American label Important Records and recently did a sneakily self-released third album, “The Grain”.
The Creep by Slomo

If you’ve not been before, Inkfolk is a temporary pop-up bar that takes over the basement of Hebden Bridge landmark Machpelah Works for weekend long events.

Because of the train times, we are starting a bit early, so the plan is:
Doors 7pm
Slomo 8pm
Colin Potter 9pm
Last train to Manchester 10.34pm [venue right by train station, so you’ll have plenty of time]
Last train to Leeds 11.04pm

Tickets are £10 on the door but you can buy advance tickets here for £7 and you will receive a free mix CD on arrival. This time it’s “Live At Midgehole WMC”, a heavy krautrock DJ set recorded live.

It’s also a sneaky tactic to freak away those post-Christmas blues…..with good music and cheap booze.

Well, look what we found….

Magpahi is the project of Alison Cooper from Twisted Nerve Records favourites Samandtheplants. Alison uses this nom de plume to explore folk traditions. In fact, as Magpahi she recorded half of the highly collectible fourth volume of Devon Folk Tapes and also the recent debut volume of Lancashire Folk Tapes alongside such luminaries as Dylan Carlson of Earth, Bridget Hayden, Dean McPhee and the mysterious N.Racker.

Hear for yourself

Dean McPhee is an acclaimed solo guitarist. Last year his album “Son Of Black Peace” on Blast First Petite won him rave reviews from such disparate sources as The Wire, Record Collector, Drowned In Sound, Mojo and even Pop Matters who said it was “as devastatingly beautiful as Michael Chapman’s Fully Qualified Survivor, the best of John Fahey, John Martyn, and the most meditative lines Richard Thompson has ever played”.

Our latest addition to the bill is Songs of Green Pheasant. This is the solo project of Duncan Sumpner and has released three albums for Fat Cat Records under that moniker as well as a free digital compilation of unreleased material and a new album this year on Rusted Rail.
“harkens back to 60s staples like Simon & Garfunkel or Nick Drake, not to mention Sumpner’s haunting pastoral imagery” – Pitchfork
“magical stuff” – Drowned In Sound
“a melancholy yet uplifting meditation on landscape, loss and memory, with sublime brass and piano accompaniment perfectly complementing Sumpner’s light touch with vocal harmony and guitar.” – Popmatters
“beautiful and accomplished” – Terrascope

It’s £5 on the door or only £3 for an advance virtual ticket with a free mix CD from OUR SHOP (Paypal only)

They’re a six piece Italian band who mix head-fuzzing psychedelic guitar sounds with rhythm-heavy Arabian music. They self-released their untitled debut album last year which caused a global splash and the ripples have been riding high ever since. They are roaming the continent in support of their second album “Positive Force” which is coming out on UK label Julia Dream Recordings. Here’s a taster of the new sound:

Sinai [Edit] by Al Doum and the Faryds

The venue we’re using is new Hebden institution Inkfolk. Described as a pop-up venue, Inkfolk is once more taking over the canalside basement of Hebden landmark the Machpelah Works for a whole weekend and we’re honoured to be asked to finish it off. The venue is easy enough to find being right on the main road through Hebden by the turning for the train station.

Al from the band will also be playing a special DJ set of Afro Sound, Nigerian blues, African funk & fusion, modern high life, funky Lagos and Ethio jazz.

Tickets are on sale now from wasistdas.bigcartel.com/ and first 20 buyers get a free Was Ist Das? mix CD made especially for the event.
